Historical Roots
Gullah farmers, descendants of West Africans brought to the South Carolina Lowcountry, have cultivated the land for generations using traditional, ancestral methods. More than just food producers, they are cultural stewards—preserving Gullah-Geechee identity through farming practices rooted in history.

In the face of land loss and systemic barriers, Gullah farmers built a cooperative model grounded in mutual support and shared purpose. Through the Gullah Farmers’ Cooperative Association, they continue to uplift their community, protect their heritage, and ensure the land remains a source of legacy, livelihood, and resilience for future generations.

Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) Certification
Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) certification is a vital component of the Gullah Farmers Cooperative Association’s strategy to ensure food safety, expand market access, and strengthen its collective farming capacity. GAP standards help minimize risks of contamination by guiding how produce is grown, handled, and stored.
For the Gullah Farmers Cooperative Association, GAP certification opens doors to institutional buyers such as schools, hospitals, and government programs, while ensuring consistent food safety practices across all member farms. It also boosts the co-op’s ability to compete for federal contracts and large-scale retail partnerships. With its centralized processing facility, Gullah Farmers Cooperative Association is well-positioned to maintain compliance, support its farmers through shared resources, and scale its impact across the Lowcountry.
